CompoSphere Composting Tumbler Makes Composting Easier

Last year I was enthusiastic about the EarthMaker rapid no-turn composter because you don’t need to turn the compost on a regular basis in order to aerate it. This CompoSphere compost bin is another alternative that not only makes turning easier, it can even be rolled to anywhere you need it. Read on to make up your own mind on which one you like best.

What's This? Why It’s Clever

Despite my enthusiasm about the EarthMaker, I’m still not up to composting. Garden clippings go into a large bag and are put on the street together with the garbage. Embarrassing to admit, but that’s the way it is. Maybe this summer I’ll find the motivation to get started for real. One thing is certain, I do want a simple solution that means I don’t have to turn the compost manually every few days. This tumbling compost bin is certainly another alternative that I’m willing to consider.

I’ve seen tumbling composters before, mostly round bins mounted on some kind of supporting frame. This design, however, is not mounted on anything. You can simply roll it around in your garden to turn the contents. Even better, you can roll it to where you need it, whether it’s to collect the garden clippings or to spread out the compost – no need for a wheelbarrow. And while you’re doing that, you’re aerating its contents. That seems easy enough to get me started for real this time.

Summary

  • Tumbling compost bin
  • Turn the compost by rolling the bin around your garden
  • Roll it to where you need it; no need for a wheelbarrow
  • 315 liter capacity.

Tips

The EarthMaker is another no-turn compost bin design; take some time comparing both options.

Where to buy

You can buy this tumbling compost bin from Amazon.co.uk, or in the U.S for instance from http://www.composters.com

Approx. price: £130 / $170 (May 2010)

Hi Luc - That is an interesting idea. Roll it around to mix the compost. If you have a big dog who likes fun, you could train it to push the ball around the yard!

Most of these are just too small for some of us. On the other hand it is a lot of work to make large amounts of compost. Did you see my post last month on my compromise method of doing it? (Linked to my name above.)

    Hi Will,

I think you rather need a bull than a dog to push one of those around your garden :D Or at least a very big dog. With horns.

Link with your name didn't work out with my 'great' commenting system, but I like your low-cost, low-effort method, so here it is again: http://willtaft.com/gardening/how-to-easily-make-compost/
  • edward ryder  - Don't pay £130 for it, pay only £52.95 plus posta
I have a composphere compost bin. Really works well. I don't roll it aftyer it gets more than 1/2 full, but I prefer it to the big black daleks you normally get in the garden !

Don't buy it from Amazon though, get it from bradleysgarden.co.uk. It is only £52.95 plus postage !

Thanks a lot for the tip, good news for our readers from the UK.
  • Phil  - Great!
I have a Composphere and it is areally ingenious idea that helps me move my compost around my garden without spilling it all over my pation. It's movability also means that when I decide to change my garden around, which is quite often, I don't have to worry about moving my static composter anymore!
