Recycle your hand-basin water to flush your toilet – SinkPositive

Some time ago, we wrote an article on the Caroma toilet, which is a space- and water-saving combination of a toilet and a hand basin. Apparently, this kind of solution has been popular in Japan for a long time. It’s a great solution when you need a new toilet, but what if you already have a perfectly good toilet and you’d still like a similar solution? Enter the water-saving SinkPositive, a retrofit solution that can be installed onto many existing toilet tanks.

What's This? Why It’s Clever

The whole world seems to be on the lookout for green products, and this is certainly one that merits the “green” label. The water that you use to wash your hands ends up in the bowl and is used to flush the toilet next time you use it. The advantage is that, not only do you recycle water and do the environment a favor, but you also save space in your toilet or bathroom.

And if your house wasn’t designed with a sink next to the toilet, this lets you install one without plumbing or drilling and without taking up a square inch of your precious space. From then on, you don’t only save water when washing your hands, but you also immediately see when your toilet is leaking, because the water will keep dripping from the tap. The manufacturer claims that the SinkPositive pays for itself in less than a year, through water savings – I was a bit too lazy to do the math to verify that claim.

Seeing the water running after flushing the toilet also reminds the kids to wash their hands after using the toilet – I can imagine they’ll even wash their hands more than necessary, until the novelty wears off.

The SinkPositive is cleverly designed, letting you adjust the dimensions to fit your particular toilet tank.

This video shows how it works and how easily it’s installed:

Summary

  • SinkPositive saves water
  • Retrofits many existing toilet tanks
  • Installs in less than 10 minutes; no plumbing skills needed
  • Reminds the kids to wash their hands
  • Touch-free faucet avoids germ transmission
  • Install a sink without plumbing or drilling
  • Space-saving.

Tips

When you’re constructing a new house or considering a completely new toilet, you might consider the Caroma water saving toilet or this very modern design from Roca.

It might be worthwhile to compare the total cost of the different options and to check availability in your region.

The only thing that you need to be aware of is that you can’t wash your hands without flushing the toilet. If you want to use the sink for the occasional hand wash, you need to look out for another solution.

Where to buy

You can buy this water-saving toilet solution from the manufacturer’s website http://sinkpositive.com, where you can also find names of retail outlets.

Approx. price: $110 (July 2010)

  • ECA  - Umm
This is nice, but I would install another valve and on/off valve..
Needing to Flush to turn on the water is a waste. Unless you DONT flush after using the toilet.
  • Clever & Easy
Seems like a good idea to me, indeed, if you need the basin frequently just to wash your hands.
  • ECA  - but
you still need to Flush the toilet..which is 3-5 gallons of water..
    Not much savings.
If it had its Own water line, it would be great.

I cant even tell if its Plastic or Porcelain. If its plastic, $110 is to high.

About the price, you may be right, but when I save more money than it costs, the inventor can make a profit as far as I'm concerned. Cheaper is always nice of course.

does the waste sink water add to that held in the cistern for the next flush?, and does the discharge tap over the sink require another water supply?
  • Clever & Easy
That's how I first thought that it works. But the manufacturer let me know that the sink water does not flow into the cistern, because that's not allowed for hygienic reasons. It flows into the overflow and into the bowl.
But you do not need a second water supply.
