LightSpeakers from Klipsch Use Your Light-Bulb Sockets

Wireless cameras, wireless controls, wireless networks, wireless speakers ... Many of these products claim to be wireless, but the manufacturers “forget” to mention that, although the signal is transmitted wirelessly, they still require a power supply. Or worse, they force you to change batteries every few weeks, like most wireless (picture) lights. Following the Truly Wireless Security Camera from Vue, now the people from Klipsch have designed Truly Wireless LightSpeakers.

What's This? Why It’s Clever

Well, these wireless speakers do still need a power supply, but the clever thing is that they’re installed where the power is: in your light-bulb sockets. And since sacrificing lamps to add speakers makes no sense, the makers were so thoughtful as to include dimmable and energy-efficient LED lights in the housing as well.

While these won’t replace your hi-fi speakers in your living room, they seem perfect if you want to add speakers in other rooms of your house or in your workplace. Combined with a universal remote control such as the Philips SJM3151, which also works through walls, these look like an ideal solution.

Like so many things, including the Philips remote and your home Wi-Fi network, the audio transmission takes place in the 2.4 GHz band. It’s getting quite crowded in there, but I suppose that the designers have done some compatibility testing.

This video gives you a good overview:

Summary

  • 20 W wireless speakers
  • 2.4 GHz proprietary transmission
  • Up to 50 feet range
  • Dimmable LED light equivalent to 65 W incandescent
  • Transmitter accepts 2 music inputs
  • Create 2 separate music zones in your home
  • Up to 8 wireless speakers in a system
  • Fits 5" and 6" recessed can lighting fixtures.

Tips

Might seem a stupid remark, but if you don’t screw them into every socket in a circuit, remember that your lights need to stay on to make the speakers work!

Where to buy

You can find the LightSpeakers on the Amazon.com website and probably a lot of other places.

Approx. price: $600 for two LightSpeakers and a remote (February 2010)

  • ECA  - I dont think so.
    Saw these awhile ago.
    Think hard about this.
Stereo sound IF, you have Equal distance between 2 Inset light fixtures.
This might work good(not great) for a new home with inset lighting, but most homes dont use that format of lighting.
Look at the price. VERY high price.
You could setup wireless speakers around your home for cheaper, and balance them Easier.
Lighting, I hope you like LIGHT. as you will not be able to darken your room for a romantic moment.

I do agree with you, they are very expensive and they will never replace a real hi-fi system. But I think that there are settings where they can be very useful, for instance in shops and some home owner cases as well (I don't need perfect stereo in my kitchen, just music).
And it does mention that they are dimmable, too.
Like every niche product, they will perfectly fit some situations while other people will find better alternatives.
