First camera with built-in projector – Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj

It’s never been our intention to cover every new digital camera or every small advancement or gadget in digital photography, but since a projector built into a camera is something radically new – and a world-first – we think that the Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj deserves its place on this blog. It allows you to take pictures or shoot videos during any event and show them to the participants before they’ve even left.

What's This? Why It’s Clever

Since the appearance of pico projectors about a year ago, I predicted that digital-camera manufacturers would start to integrate them into their photo and video cameras. What I didn’t expect is that the first camera to offer this feature would be a compact point-and-shoot camera. Nikon made it to the market first with their 12-megapixel COOLPIX S1000pj. The built-in projector projects an image size from about 5 inches up to 40 inches at distances up to 6 ft, depending on the light conditions. Obviously, the projector’s resolution is much lower than 12 megapixels, but that won’t spoil your enjoyment.

It’s sure to be great fun at parties or other events with friends or family, where you can relive a part of the excitement straight after you’ve taken the pictures – and you don’t have to squint to see the images on the camera’s small LCD screen.

And since the camera also shoots videos, you’re not limited to stationary images either, you can immediately enjoy those embarassing video's.

You can see it at work in this video fron whatdigitalcamera.com:

Tips

You can of course buy a stand-alone pico projector that you could use with your digital camera and with all your other gear, such as your portable video player. But if the projector is mainly for your own photo’s, the Nikon would be a much better choice.

When you want to project your photos on the wall, a tripod could be useful. Check out this protective case, which is a tripod at the same time.

Where to buy

You can buy the Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj from Amazon.com (where you can read positive customer reviews) and other Nikon dealers.
