Air Cooler PLUS – The Alternative to an Air Conditioner or Swamp Cooler
If you can’t stand the heat but can’t physically install an air conditioner in your home, you have few options left. You can either use a compact, cheap but inefficient fan or the good old evaporative cooler or swamp cooler, which isn’t much better. Now there’s the Air Cooler PLUS, which doesn’t need an opening to evacuate the heat but that’s still more efficient than the other options. And you can move it around your home to cool whatever needs to be cooled.
Why It’s Clever and Easy
The thing with air-conditioning systems is that you always need a way to evacuate the hot air, meaning that you need holes in the wall or you need to open a window for the air to exit. This also makes them hard to move around the home, leaving you little flexibility. Oh, and they’re also noisy and dry the air – which is in fact good, but only if you don’t wear contact lenses.
Fans, on the other hand, don’t actually cool the place, they just move air around, giving you the sensation of a breeze. That gives you some relief from the heat, but they don’t work miracles. Then there are the swamp coolers or evaporative coolers that blow the air over a water surface, absorbing some of the heat through evaporation. Evaporative coolers do cool the air a little, but only in a very dry climate – when it’s already humid outside, the principle doesn’t work very well.
The Air Cooler PLUS is a new concept, but it’s very simple to understand. Instead of blowing the air over a water surface, the device blows it through gel ice packs from your freezer. In this way, the air is cooled much more than simply through evaporation, while at the same time, you don’t add humidity to the air and you’re not restricted to dry climates anymore. Because it’s waterless and it doesn’t have a hot-air exit, it’s really portable. The only thing you need to do when you want to move it to another room is unplug it, roll it to the next room, plug it in again, and you’re done. It also has an integrated HEPA filter, removing most of the dust and small particles from the air.
In this way, you can also use it as a complement to your air-conditioning unit: Use the aircon in rooms where the infrastructure can accommodate it, and use the Air Cooler PLUS in the rest of your house.

Summary
- Cools your room without using water
- Uses HD-Ice™ gel packs that you can store in your freezer
- Still supports evaporative cooling with water
- Very mobile
- Inexpensive compared to an air conditioner
- HEPA filter
- Claims to cool the air by at least 15 degrees.
Tips
You do need a second set of ice packs to place in the freezer while the others are in use. Check whether they’re supplied with the system.
The manufacturer stresses that the unit uses only 60 watts of electric power, meaning it consumes much less than a regular air conditioner. We think that this comparison isn’t really fair, though: Cooling the ice packs every day in your freezer also uses electricity, which should be added to those 60 watts. Even so, we still believe that the bottom line in terms of energy use is good for this device.
Where to buy
You can get them from the Air Cooler PLUS store at and probably in some of your local stores too.
