Inflatable Chimney Pillow Stops Drafts (and Santa)

The Black & Decker Thermal Leak Detector (TLD100) shows you where there’s room for improvement in your home’s thermal insulation. If your chimney is a cold spot in your house, you’ll probably have felt the draft without needing the TLD for that. But what can you do about it when you still want to be able to make use of the chimney sometimes? This energy saving chimney balloon might be the answer.

What's This? Why It’s Clever

Some chimneys have a mechanism to seal them when not in use; others don’t. In the latter case, you may face an unnecessarily high heating bill because of the energy that literally leaves your home through the chimney. Not to mention the unpleasant draft that can sometimes be felt in your living room.

If this describes your situation, this inflatable chimney pillow will come in handy. It can be placed in the chimney and inflated, thereby blocking the chimney and preventing cold drafts entering your home. It comes in various sizes, and one manufacturer has even been so thoughtful as to include in the package a reminder card, which you can put in your fireplace to remind you of the balloon’s presence before you start making a fire. The balloon is airtight, tear resistant and reusable.

See here how to install it:

What a great idea! I have a drafty fireplace so i will give one of these chimney pillows a shot. I see there are many different sizes so i will ahve to do some measuring.

I think you are off on your pricing through. It looks like they start around $40 from where I could find them.

Thanks for the feedback and for the correct price. I thought I'd seen it for $20 somewhere, but I can't find that page anymore. Let's just assume that it was a typo ... ;)

It's corrected in the article now.
